Council interrupted at this point. ‘These things were found after one o’clock on Monday morning,’ he reminded the court, ‘Twenty four hours after the murders, therefore I don’t see what service it would be to the prisoner if she could prove that the blood was dry; might it not well be dry in that time?’ He had a point.

The next witness was Richard Hughes, the second watchman who had been on duty at the Temple. He recounted the events as he remembered them starting at past one o’clock on Monday morning. He told how he and ‘Brother Watchman Mastreter’ had been called by Kerrel. When they climbed the stairs of the Alienation Office, it was Sarah who opened the door to them. Hughes described how Kerrel looked in his drawers and found a pair of earrings claimed by Sarah. The incident of the pawned waistcoats was repeated. According to his evidence, Kerrel then challenged his laundress ‘Why did you not ask me for money?’ He also recounted how Kerrel had asked him and Mastreter to ‘take care of her;’ but as we were not charged with her before a Constable, we thought we had no occasion to keep her in custody; and so we discharged her.’
